First look: 'The Hidden House' opens in downtown Chandler

Launched in August by restaurateurs Gavin Jacobs and Jackie and Elliott Hall—the team behind The Brickyard—The Hidden House brings a new level of sophistication to the Chandler restaurant scene. Located west of SanTan Brewing Company on Commonwealth Avenue, the historic cottage has been in the Hall family for years and sat empty for a long time. Sally Clasen is a Midwest transplant who has lived in the Valley for half her life, swapping wool for cotton. When she’s not chasing Arizona sunsets she’s making reservations for Sunday brunch.

Originally from South Africa, Gavin Jacobs, a restauranteur and ASU W.P. Carey alumnus, has a deep rooted passion for serving the community of Chandler through an unparalleled dining experience. The Hidden House offers flexibility to diners with reservations for on-site dining, delivery options or take out for their various entrees and cocktails to go. The seasonal fare, overseen by chef Aaron Rickel, includes appetizers like avocado toast, pork belly tacos, lobster mac & cheese, and Hamachi crudo.

He has dedicated over 10 years of his professional career to the study of liquid chemistry and the power of flavor profiles to create an immaculate drink. After working at some of Phoenix's finest dining establishments and launching his own apparel company, Gavin shifted his focus to hospitality and opened his first restaurant in 2012. He now owns and operates The Brickyard Downtown, a 90 seat craft cocktail and tapas restaurant.

He's been in Chandler for a "long while" now and to open a place like Hidden House in his community feels "amazing," he said. Jacobs hopes that his restaurant feels like a relaxing escape for people from their day-to-day struggles. It's not every day you can dine in a historic cottage built in 1939.

Appetizers and bar food include pork belly tacos, truffle mac n' cheese and shishito peppers with candied ginger. "The reason I’m in this business is because I want to take care of people, I want to nourish," Jacobs said. "I believe in people, family, and love, pulling people together – no matter how bad it is in the world, sit them down and take them away from that."

Now, the 850-square-foot house, where some of the original elements have been preserved, has a renewed life that harkens back to a Colonial, cozy vintage look with white wainscoting and dark wood floors—and plenty of room for modern hospitality options. Prior to the Hidden House, he deepened his knowledge and refined his skills during his time as a chef at Top of the Rock at the Buttes Marriott, LON’s at the Hermosa Inn, and Culinary Dropout. He excels at developing unique recipes that honor the science of the cocktail, while blending it with the art of creativity.
